Little Tibet in the Zillertal

sommer

Duration inwards: approx. 1.25 h . Distance to destination: approx. 4 km . Ascent: 108 hm . Descent 97 hm

The Hohenaualm is also called the Little Tibet of the Zillertal. Here there are "sherpas", prayer wheels and prayer flags. But otherwise everything is very traditional Tyrolean: the hut with two small rooms has a rustic appearance, and on the pastures all around, around 30 head of cattle and Angus mother cows are enjoying life. And if you sit on the terrace of the hut, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Zillertal Alps and the shimmering waters of the Zillergrund reservoir, which reflect the blue sky in fine weather.

Take one of the regular buses to the Zillergrund reservoir - the starting point of the hike. The trail leads past the turquoise-green water of the reservoir, surrounded by mighty mountains with steep cliffs. The closer you get to the Hohenaualm, the more the landscape reminds  you of Tibet. From a distance you can already see the red, blue and yellow stoffe of the Tibetan flags waving in the wind. A last stretch past small wooden huts and several prayer wheels finally takes you to the Hohenaualm, which is decorated with historical paintings, antlers and milk churns.

Tip: From a bus fare of € 2, you receive an environmental bonus - a voucher for € 1.50, which you can redeem in one of the inns in the Zillergrund with a minimum consumption of € 6.
